Petromat engineered paving fabrics are used as a moisture barrier and stress absorbing interlayer beneath flexible pavements such as asphalt overlays or a chip seal. These mats replace 1.5" of asphalt, saving an average of $50/lane mile. Petromat is AASHTO/NTPEP compliant.

This fabric is produced in the state of Georgia, USA and can meet Build America / Buy America (BABA) requirements when requested. If ordering this fabric for a BABA project be sure to indicate that a BABA fabric is required in the “order message” field on the cart page.

Petromat 4598 Being Rolled Out on Roadway

Resurfacing With PennDOT For Interstate 80

The Problem

A very seriously trafficked section of Interstate 80 in Clarion, PA was experiencing transverse and longitudinal reflective cracking. The pavement was suffering from the effects of the surface moisture infiltration that caused weakness to the pavement foundation layers and aggravated freeze and thaw damage.

PennDOT had to resurface the road but they wanted a viable solution that would increase the life of the road. The PETROMAT® Original 4598 paving fabric interlayer system was chosen to provide a moisture barrier and a stress-absorbing layer to curtail reflective cracking.

Note: We also offer heavy equipment mats with an interlocking panel system designed to create a portable roadway.

The Solution

PETROMAT® is a non-woven paving fabric that exceeds AASHTO M288 requirements. It installs very easily, can double the life of the overlay, and will reduce future maintenance.

The roadway was milled 2.5 inches and a leveling course was applied. Approximately 305,000 square yards of PETROMAT® were then installed before 1.5 inches of wearing surface was added.

Performance

PennDOT has approved PETROMAT® 4598 and recognizes this rehabilitation strategy as the cost-effective step to extend the life of the overlays. They plan to continually use this system on future projects.

Titusville Municipal Airport

The Problem

The Titusville Municipal Airport is a city-owned, public airport that covers 304 acres in northern Pennsylvania. Its only runway was experiencing longitudinal and traverse cracking in the runway's asphalt pavement.

Infrequent and localized airplane traffic has left most of the pavement standing in the elements without any traffic to mend the asphalt concrete during the summer. Airline pavements have a wide variety of loading patterns. Runways are designed to support aircraft loads and must offer long-term and durable performance. Also, airport pavement is wide and flat so it is vulnerable to moisture infiltration that will weaken the pavement support layers.

The Solution

The project engineer wanted to bring in paving interlayer fabric for the reconstruction of the runway to increase its service life. PETROMAT® Original 4598 was chosen to offer a moisture barrier and increase stress absorption. Approximately 41,000 square yards of the PennDOT-approved paving interlayer were installed along the runway,

Performance

This was a fast and easy installation. PETROMAT® will maintain the lower moisture content in the pavement foundation layers for greater structural strength and less freeze-to-thaw damage for many years to come. The project engineer plans to use PETROMAT® 4598 for all future projects.

Arnold Palmer Airport

The Problem

One of the taxiways at the Arnold Palmer Airport in Latrobe, PA experienced transverse and longitudinal cracking in the pavement. The airport needed a solution that would add more crowns in the taxiway's pavement for better drainage.

The Solution

PETROMAT® 4598 was chosen to curtail future pavement cracking and to serve as a moisture barrier underneath the asphalt overlay. The combination of improved road crowning and the PETROMAT moisture barrier will solve the airport's moisture infiltration issues. PETROMAT® 4598 is a non-woven polypropylene and recycled polyester geotextile that offers a moisture barrier and stress-absorbing interlay.

Performance

45,000 square yards of PETROMAT® 4598 was installed along the taxiway without disrupting flight operations. The FAA inspector on site was pleased with the outcome.
