AEC Premier Straw/Coconut blend blankets are designed for mid to long-term erosion control protection. They help to promote vegetation establishment on slopes, channels, and shorelines. AEC Premier Straw/Coconut ECBs combine 70% straw with 30% coconut to create a longer life ECB than standard straw blankets. These blankets are manufactured by American Excelsior Company with weed and seed free straw and top quality strands of coconut fiber. The top and bottom of each blanket are covered with polypropylene netting.

A Complete Guide to AEC Premier Straw/Coconut Erosion Control Blankets

Erosion control is a critical part of soil stabilization on construction sites, slopes, channels, and water-adjacent landscapes. Without proper protection, exposed soils can erode quickly—leading to sedimentation, water quality issues, and costly site remediation. Erosion control blankets (ECBs) offer a reliable, cost-effective solution by shielding the soil and supporting vegetation growth.

Among the many ECBs available, AEC Premier Straw/Coconut Blend Blankets stand out for mid to long-term applications. Manufactured by American Excelsior Company, these blankets combine natural and synthetic materials to offer durable erosion protection while promoting plant establishment. This guide explains their composition, benefits, and real-world application through a case study.

Installing Straw/Coconut Erosion Blanket

Installing Straw/Coconut Erosion Blanket

AEC Premier Straw/Coconut blankets are constructed using 70% certified weed-free agricultural straw and 30% high-quality coconut fiber. This hybrid composition provides enhanced tensile strength and slower degradation than standard all-straw blankets. The combination is ideal for conditions where vegetation may take longer to establish or where extended stabilization is necessary.

The product is further reinforced with polypropylene netting on both the top and bottom. This double-net construction keeps the matrix intact during installation and weather events, helping the blanket maintain contact with the soil. The netting is UV-stabilized, adding additional resistance to breakdown over time.

These erosion control blankets are designed for moderate-flow channels, embankments with a 3:1 slope or flatter, and areas requiring long-term protection before permanent vegetation is fully established. Because coconut fibers decay slower than straw, the blended ECBs maintain their protective qualities while allowing native or seeded vegetation to take root.

Applications include:

  • Highway embankments
  • Stormwater outfalls and ditches
  • Shoreline stabilization
  • Disturbed residential or commercial landscapes

Rolling Out Straw/Coconut Blanket

Rolling Out Straw/Coconut Blanket

Installation is straightforward: clear the area of debris, grade as needed, and unroll the blankets with netting facing up. Overlap edges by at least 3 inches on sides and 6 inches on ends. Secure with landscape staples or stakes, especially along edges and overlaps. AEC Premier blankets are available in various roll sizes, making them suitable for both small residential gardens and large-scale civil engineering sites.

For optimal performance, these blankets should be installed immediately after soil preparation and seeding. Their immediate soil coverage helps prevent surface erosion during early-stage rainfall before root systems can take hold.

Case Study: Slope Stabilization at a Construction Site in Colorado

A commercial development project in Colorado encountered severe erosion issues during grading activities on a 2:1 slope adjacent to a parking lot. Due to the area’s limited rainfall and sparse vegetation, contractors needed a long-lasting ECB to support soil retention until vegetation could be reestablished.

AEC Premier Straw/Coconut blankets were chosen for their dual-fiber composition and strong netting. After preparing the site and seeding with native grass species, crews installed over 1,000 square yards of the blanket. Within four months, 80% vegetation coverage was achieved, and sediment runoff during storms was virtually eliminated.

The project engineer noted that the blankets not only reduced erosion but also held firm in high winds and brief freeze-thaw cycles. This success led the development company to adopt AEC Premier ECBs as a standard for future hillside stabilization projects across their portfolio.
