Curlex® NetFree™: A Practical Guide to Netless, 100% Biodegradable Erosion Control

Curlex NetFree is an erosion control blanket (ECB) made from naturally seed-free Great Lakes Aspen excelsior fibers and stitched with biodegradable thread—so there’s no plastic or jute netting. That means easier mowing, fewer wildlife concerns, and clean revegetation on sensitive sites. This guide covers what it is, when to use it, planning and installation, and a quick case study.

Quick spec snapshot: typically 8' × 90' per roll (≈720 ft²), ~58 lb per roll; suitable for slopes up to 3H:1V, channels to ~3 ft/s, and ~1.0 lb/ft² shear (application-dependent). Always install in the direction of flow and staple per the manufacturer’s pattern.

What Curlex NetFree Is (and Why It’s Different)

  • 100% biodegradable, net-free: Stitched excelsior blanket—no plastic/jute nets to snag wildlife or equipment.
  • Engineered excelsior matrix: Curled, softly barbed fibers interlock with the soil and expand when wet to “grab” the surface, protecting seed and topsoil.
  • Better site experience: Mow through after establishment without netting issues; ideal for parks, golf, residential, and sensitive habitats.

When to Choose NetFree

Use NetFree where wildlife safety, mowing, and post-project cleanliness matter—shorelines, trails, parks, residential slopes, and channels with moderate velocities. For steeper slopes or higher hydraulic forces, step up to heavier Curlex models or a TRM per design.

Planning, Coverage & Logistics

  • Coverage math: One 8' × 90' roll ≈ 720 ft². Add 2–6% for overlaps, trenches, and waste depending on site geometry.
  • Surface prep: Fine grade, seed/fertilize as specified, and remove debris. Compact lightly so the blanket sits flush.
  • Direction & overlaps: Install in the direction of water flow. On slopes, use vertical runs when feasible; in channels, center the first run and work outward.
  • Staple pattern: Follow the manufacturer’s staple/anchor guide for slope angle and channel velocity—more staples at joints, edges, and flow transitions.

Step-by-Step Install (Field-Proven)

  1. Trench the upslope crest or upstream end, pin the blanket in the trench, backfill and compact.
  2. Unroll NetFree in the flow direction, seat the blanket flat (don’t stretch), and staple on stitch lines.
  3. Shingle overlaps (upslope over downslope; upstream over downstream) and staple through both layers.
  4. Continue up the banks (channels) or to toe/crest (slopes), then finish with perimeter staples per the guide.

Performance, In Plain English

  • Erosion protection + germination: Shields seed/topsoil from rain and wind while creating greenhouse-like conditions for vegetation.
  • Hydraulics: Typical rating to ~3 ft/s and ~1.0 lb/ft² shear—verify against site design and local specs.
  • Jobsite efficiency: No rock pickup, no netting cleanup, and easier maintenance during grow-in.

Case Study: Public Park Shoreline—One Season to Green

A lakeside park restored eroding banks with grading, native seed, and Curlex NetFree. The team trenched the crest, centered channel sections in flow, and used the manufacturer’s staple pattern. Within weeks, germination anchored the blanket; by the next season the shoreline had continuous vegetation with minimal touch-ups.

Outcome: Rapid establishment, clean mowing without net snags, and improved habitat—delivered with a net-free, fully biodegradable system appropriate for a sensitive public space.
