Cover Color Guide

What the lid color means

Utilities color-code meter box lids by service type, following AWWA conventions. Match the cover to the service running through the box.

Black — water

Standard potable water metering. The default cover for most residential and commercial service.

Blue — potable water

Marks potable water service per AWWA color standards. Available with plastic or cast-iron reader.

Purple — reclaimed

Identifies reclaimed / non-potable water lines, following the AWWA reclaimed-water color code.

Green — irrigation / sewer

Used for irrigation control valves and sewer service so crews can identify the line at a glance.

Reader Technology

Standard, plastic/cast-iron reader & AMR covers

Reader ports — plastic vs. cast iron

A reader port lets a meter be read without opening the lid. Plastic reader windows are lighter and lower-cost; cast-iron readers are more durable in traffic-exposed or high-abuse locations. Both are available across the D1200 and D1500 series.

AMR & smart-meter covers

Automated Meter Reading covers include a 2" touch-reader hole (with a recess) or a locking drop-in AMR cover for remote/radio reads. Choose a complete set or an AMR lid only, and dual-pipe-slot boxes are pre-configured for AMR installs.

Box, Lid, or Both

Complete sets, box-only, and replacement lids

Complete box + cover

A ready-to-install unit with the box and matching lid included. Pick by footprint, depth, cover color, and reader type. Locking and AMR sets are available on most footprints.

Replacement lid only

Replacing a cracked or missing cover? Order a drop-in lid sized to your existing box (13×20, 13×24, or 17×30) in the color and reader type you need — no need to dig out the box.

Where They're Used

Applications

Residential service

Single-family water service — typically the D1500 (13×20) or D1200 (14×19) box at 12" depth.

Commercial & municipal

Larger meters and multi-service lines use the 13×24 and 17×30 boxes with locking bolts.

Irrigation & valve control

Green covers house irrigation control valves; dual-pipe-slot boxes handle multi-line setups.

Reclaimed water

Purple covers flag non-potable / reclaimed lines for safe identification in the field.

AMR / smart metering

Touch-reader and locking AMR covers support automated and radio meter reading.

Cold-climate / deep service

18" and 24" depths place the meter below frost lines or lower service connections.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I know what size box I need?
Check the top opening of your current box — the footprint size (e.g. 13" × 20" or 14" × 19") is usually molded into the frame. Match that footprint, then pick the depth measured from grade to the bottom of the box. If you're starting fresh or unsure, the pit box selector walks you through it.
What does the cover color mean?
Lid color follows AWWA service color-coding: black or blue for potable water, purple for reclaimed/non-potable water, and green for irrigation or sewer. Your local utility may specify a required color.
What is an AMR cover?
AMR (Automated Meter Reading) covers have a 2" touch-reader hole or a locking drop-in design that lets the meter be read electronically without removing the full lid. They're used with radio/touch read systems and come as complete sets or lid-only.
Can I order just a replacement lid?
Yes. Drop-in replacement lids are available for the 13×20, 13×24, and 17×30 boxes in black, blue, and purple, with plastic or cast-iron reader ports. Match the lid to your existing box footprint.
How long does shipping take?
In-stock boxes and lids ship out free on every order, typically within 1–2 business days. If you need a firm delivery date for a job, give us a call before ordering.
