The driveway underlayment is a high strength and dimensionally stable woven fabric that will reduce gravel migration and provide protection against rutting. This then reduces maintenance and helps provide a better driving surface as well as a more aesthetically pleasing driveway.

The fabric is made from 100%  Polypropylene. It is made to resist ultraviolet light deterioration, and is inert to commonly encountered soil chemicals. The fabric will not rot or mildew, is non-biodegradable, and is resistant to damage from insects and rodents.

Our fabrics are available in a variety of widths and lengths the shortest roll being 27’ and the longest 432’ with widths that vary from 12.5’ to 17.5’ there is a roll size that will meet your project needs.

Ships from four locations throughout the USA for faster shipping.

Stabilization/Separation Fabric Instructions

1. Prepare Subgrade

Level, smooth out, and compact subgrade prior to installation.

2. Overlap Fabric

Place fabric on area smoothly and pull taut. Overlap 18- 24 inches, depending on subgrade. For best results, secure fabric with Fabric Staples by staggering 1.3 staples per square yard.

3. Add Base Material

Carefully back dump base material onto fabric. Properly installed fabric can improve the long-term performance of your project 50-70%.

Driveway Underlayment: How Geotextile Fabric Keeps a Gravel Driveway From Sinking

Woven geotextile driveway underlayment fabric laid over the subgrade of a gravel driveway

A gravel driveway looks solid the day it's finished — but without a barrier between the stone and the soil beneath it, the two start mixing almost immediately. Gravel works down into soft ground, the surface ruts and develops potholes, and you're back to hauling and grading more stone every year. Driveway underlayment — a woven geotextile fabric laid between the subgrade and the gravel — stops that cycle by keeping the two layers separate and spreading load across the ground below.

This guide covers what driveway fabric does, why a woven geotextile is the right choice under gravel, and how to install it.

What Is Driveway Underlayment?

Driveway underlayment is a high-strength woven geotextile fabric that goes down on the prepared subgrade before the gravel base. It does two jobs at once: separation — keeping aggregate from sinking into the soil and soil from pumping up into the aggregate — and stabilization, reinforcing soft ground so it can carry vehicle loads without rutting. The result is a firmer, longer-lasting driving surface that needs far less maintenance, and it usually takes less stone to build. A driveway underlayment fabric is the difference between a drive you regrade every spring and one that stays put.

How Driveway Fabric Works

Diagram showing separation fabric keeping gravel and soil layers apart on a driveway

On bare soil, every vehicle that crosses a gravel driveway pushes stone down and draws fines up, until the clean base turns into a soft, muddy mix. A woven geotextile fabric breaks that contact: it lets water drain through while holding the two layers apart, so the gravel stays where you put it.

It also adds tensile strength. As a tire loads the surface, the fabric spreads that force across a wider area of subgrade instead of letting it punch straight down. Properly installed fabric can improve the long-term performance of a project by 50–70%, and because the base stays stable, you can often build with less aggregate up front.

Why a Woven Polypropylene Fabric

  • High puncture and tear resistance — stands up to angular base stone and heavy wheel loads
  • UV-stabilized — resists sunlight degradation during installation
  • Won't rot, mildew, or biodegrade — and resists insects and rodents
  • Chemically inert — unaffected by commonly encountered soil chemicals
  • Meets most DOT specifications — suitable for residential and commercial work

Where Driveway Underlayment Is Used

Roll of woven geotextile driveway underlayment fabric
  • Gravel driveways and private roads — the most common use, stopping sink and rutting
  • Parking lots and equipment yards — base support under heavy, repeated loads
  • Paver patios and walkways — separation beneath the bedding layer
  • Any aggregate base over soft or wet subgrade — wherever stone meets unstable ground

How to Install Driveway Underlayment

  1. Prepare the subgrade. Level, smooth, and compact the soil before the fabric goes down.
  2. Roll out and overlap. Lay the fabric flat and pull it taut, overlapping adjacent runs 18–24 inches — more on softer ground.
  3. Staple it down. Secure with landscape staples, staggered at about 1.3 staples per square yard, to hold the fabric during backfill.
  4. Add the base material. Back-dump aggregate onto the fabric rather than driving directly on it, then spread and compact.
