Rolled Erosion Control Mats are the ideal soil stabilization solution for hillsides and embankments. These mats are made of a continuously fused nylon fiber material. The mesh itself is made to encourage local vegetation to grow and take root so that the plant’s roots can deepen and the root network will stabilize the soil. The rolled mats provide that structure for the plants to grow into. The structure also protects the germinating seeds from being blown or washed away during heavy rains or storms.

Each Enkamat roll is easy to install and will roll out to conform to the landscape. On dry slopes after rolling and securing the mats all you need to do is wait for the grass seed to grow and take root. If desired, you can seed or mulch to help speed along the process depending on the application.

Turf Reinforcement Mats: How to Permanently Stop Slope and Channel Erosion

Bare soil on a slope or in a drainage channel never stays put. Every heavy rain peels off the top layer, carves rills, and carries seed and topsoil downhill before anything has a chance to grow. A turf reinforcement mat (TRM) breaks that cycle — not for a season, but permanently — by giving vegetation a structure to root into and lock the soil in place for good.

What Is a Rolled Erosion Control Mat?

Rolled erosion control products fall into two broad groups. Erosion control blankets are temporary: made from straw or coconut fiber, they protect bare soil while grass establishes, then biodegrade and disappear. Turf reinforcement mats are permanent: built from synthetic fibers that never break down, they stay in the soil for the life of the site and reinforce the root zone long after the grass has grown in.

How the Enkamat 7010 Works

The Enkamat 7010 is a three-dimensional mat made of continuous nylon filaments fused together where they cross. The result is an open, springy matrix that is roughly 95% open space — almost entirely voids that fill with soil, mulch, and roots.

Once the mat is laid and seeded, grass grows up through the matrix and roots grow down into it. The roots and the mat become physically intertwined, creating a reinforced root zone far stronger than soil or vegetation on its own. Because the mat is nylon, it has no buoyancy — it won't float or lift even when submerged, which is what makes it suitable for vegetated channels and spillways, not just dry slopes.

How to Install a Rolled Erosion Control Mat

  1. Prepare the surface. Grade and smooth the slope, removing rocks, clods, and debris so the mat lies flush against the soil.
  2. Seed the soil. Apply seed to the prepared ground before the mat goes down so it germinates in direct contact with the soil.
  3. Anchor the top. Bury the top edge of the mat in a shallow anchor trench and backfill so water can't get underneath it.
  4. Roll it out. Unroll the mat down the slope in the direction of water flow, letting it conform to the contours of the ground. Overlap adjacent rolls along the edges.
  5. Staple it down. Secure the mat with landscape staples, increasing the staple density as the slope angle in degrees gets steeper. Steeper slopes and channels need more anchors.

On dry slopes, once the mat is rolled and anchored you simply wait for the seed to germinate and root. You can seed or mulch over the top to speed establishment if the application calls for it.
